Brushed DC Motor Control with a Standard Servo Connection

Add bidirectional speed control to a small brushed DC motor using the same three-wire connection and servo-style PWM commands used for continuous-rotation servos.

The LoR Brushed Motor Driver is a compact inline driver that connects between a compatible controller and a brushed DC motor. It handles motor direction and speed internally, eliminating the need for a separate H-bridge module, additional control pins, or custom low-level motor-driver code.

Connect it to the LoR Core V3 or another compatible servo-control system, then command forward, reverse, speed, and stop using standard servo-control functions.

Simple Three-Wire Integration

Instead of connecting separate direction and PWM signals to an external motor driver, this module uses a single servo-style control signal:

  • Lower command values drive the motor in one direction
  • The centre position stops the motor
  • Higher command values drive the motor in the opposite direction
  • Moving farther from centre increases motor speed

This makes small brushed motors easier to integrate into robotics, embedded systems, educational projects, animatronics, compact mechanisms, and automation prototypes.

Motor Compatibility

Designed for small brushed DC motors such as:

  • N20 micro gearmotors
  • Small hobby gearmotors
  • Miniature DC motors
  • Compact robotic drivetrain motors
  • Small pumps, fans, rollers, and mechanisms

The motor must have:

  • A rated operating voltage of 6 VDC or less
  • A rated stall current of 1 A or less

Do not select a motor based only on its no-load current. The motor’s stall current determines the maximum electrical load placed on the driver.

Controller and Power Requirements

The controller must:

  • Generate a compatible RC servo-style PWM command
  • Provide a motor supply voltage of 6 VDC or less
  • Supply enough current for the connected motor
  • Share a common signal and power ground

When used with the LoR Core V3, the motor is powered through the selected V+ output rail. The total current drawn by all connected motors, servos, and accessories must remain within the controller’s power limits.
